The Mair Scholarship
The Mair Scholarship was originally founded by the Occupational Health Nurses Forum in
recognition of the contribution to occupational health nursing by Professor Alex Mair when he was
Head of the Department of Community and Occupational Health Medicine, University of Dundee.
This bursary is available for OH nurses/advisers/managers/educators currently engaged in
occupational health nursing within Scotland. It was established to enhance the standard of
occupational health nursing by providing financial assistance for OH nurses in Scotland.
The scholarship may be used for the following :
To - Undertake an evaluation of OH practice.
Undertake a study tour in one of the EU countries.
Assist with the cost of research into an aspect of occupational health nursing practice.
Attend a course of study.
Assist in the cost of an OH project.
Those applicants who are successful are then invited to a brief interview held by a
selection panel consisting of three persons (these being the current Chair of the RCN OHN
Forum Scotland, a representative of the RCN Institute Scotland and the Mair Scholarship
Trustee). Interviews tend to be held in Edinburgh at the RCN head quarters.
Candidates will then be informed as to whether or not they have been successful in their
application and the amount of money that has been awarded to them.
The recipients of this award are expected to submit a brief report to the committee on completion their project/study/tour and to present their work at our annual conference in the form or an oral or poster
presentation and/or publish their work.
Applications for the yearly award must be returned by early March and the interviews will
take place in April/May of that year.
